Jasmin Joseph
Jasmin Joseph was born in La Grande Riviere du Nord in 1923. Intially employed as a brick factory laborer , he began modeling clay figurines. Encouraged by Jason Seley in 1948 he joined the Centre d'Art , where Seley instructed him on terra-cotta techniques. In 1950 Jasmin gave up sculpture and began painting , "The Green Loa" is thought to be his first. Thereafter he converted to Protestantism, and began concentrating on religious themes. In the 60s he had a vision of the Virgin with animals standing and talking to her , this vision is represented by his painting "The Apparition of the Virgin" dated 1973 and exhibited in Chicago in 1991. Thereafter most of his paintings involve the depiction of animals with moral overtones. He continues to be one of the great haitian painters from the renaissance era whose paintings are easily recognized around the world. (Thank you C. Mcneely for this info)
