Castera Bazile
Castera Bazile was born in 1923 in Jacmel. He joined the Centre d'Art in 1945. Castera Bazile came into contact with the Centre d'Art through his work as a domestic servant for DeWitt Peters, the center's founder. Bazile quickly became a professional artist and had a distinguished, albeit short, career. In the early 1950's he decorated the Episcopal Holy Cathedral of P-a-P with three murals: "The Ascension of Christ", The Baptism of Christ" and "Christ Expelling the Money Changers from the Temple". His work is included in the Davenport Museum of Art, the Milwakee Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York city. In 1955 he won First Prize in ALCOA's Caribbean International Art Competition, and won the $1,000 First Prize in the 1957 Holiday Magazine competition. In 1962, at the age of 39, Bazile contracted tuberculosis and died a few years later.
