Re: Petion Savain

In 1960, we spent part of our honeymoon in Haiti and bought a Savain marketplace painting.

The painting is 20 x 36 without the frame.

It is still in the original frame.

The painting has always hung in our living room all these years and we love the painting today as much as then. Some of the painting needs to be refurbished as some of the painting on the picture has faded.

We are, of course, in selling it, but wonder what the value of the painting might be.

In 1960, I chatted with Petion Savain at an open air market in PAP. I took a fancy to one of his oil paintings featuring ladies at market.

I bought it because of its vibrant colors, balanced design, and the subtle way he filled the background with four other ladies and a donkey.

In 1962, I married a lovely girl from Honolulu, Hawaii ~= and we will celebrate our 47th year together in October 2009. She did not like the painting and "stored" it in our basement.

A few months ago, I found my Savain, but the termites had eaten the frame.

It is now in perfect condition, and with the "perfect" frame of natural purple heart exotic hardwood from Central America.

Now, my wife sees the beauty of our Savain.

Obviously, we have never shown it to the world.

It measures 20" X 34" ~= larger than most of his oil painting.

I do NOT want to sell it, but I may consider loaning it to President Obama while he is in the White House.

Let me know if you want to see a photograph of my very special Savain.
